Book Club
St. Basil the Great Orthodox Church is sponsoring a book club for discussion of significant texts to be read throughout the year on a quarterly basis (about one work every three months). The club is open to any who are interested. The book club will be directed by parishioners Bob Galloway and Richard Miller.
Discussion of the text occurs both online and (for those close enough to attend) at a meeting held at each quarter’s end in the parish hall. This quarterly meeting will be led by Father Martin. At the beginning of each quarter, an introduction on a assigned book will be posted here. Summary notes on the assigned book will be posted at the end of the quarter.
The book club will explore a variety of topics and mysteries within the Tradition of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Topics include individual and communal spiritual direction and development, prayer, repentance, and Orthodox eschatology. Those interested may join or re-join the club at any time (See sign-up instructions below).
To kick off the new year of 2010, we will read St. Theophan the Recluse’s The Path to Salvation (St. Herman of Alaska Press, 1997). St. Theophan’s work will provide the reader a challenging and edifying map of the believer’s journey of salvation with its trials and victories. You will be dazzled by the Grace of the author’s rich vision, and delighted by his practical simplicity!
To join the book club, email director, Bob Galloway to receive the current reading questions. Additional requests for assistance may be forwarded to co-director, Richard Miller.
The online discussion segment of the book club is held at: stbasilthegreatorthodoxbookclub.org.
You do not need to register for anything in order to participate. Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks for your interest!
