Altar Servers

Serving in the Holy Altar is a privilege and an honor. Servers (acolytes) should remember that we are in the presence of the Holy Trinity, the Theotokos, the Saints, and God’s angels. All actions performed on the Altar, movements, and duties must be performed in a pious, reverent, respectful manner.

Orthodox Christian males in good standing are eligible to serve on the Altar usually starting at the ages of 7-10.  In order to serve and you must request and be accepted by Fr. Rector Sergii and the senior acolyte.

Once accepted, there is a brief training session to orient you to the procedures and routines used on the Altar.  You will then be assigned to one of several server teams, rotating each week or so for the various services. At all times, all servers are under the direction of the priests, deacons, and/or the senior acolyte.  Below are a few important rules to remember when preparing to serve.

  1. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the service.
  2. No white (or multi colored) athletic shoes are allowed.  Only dark colored shoes are permitted.
  3. It is the server’s responsibility to know when he is scheduled to serve.  In the event that you cannot serve, please contact Fr. Rector Sergii in advance to allow time to notify an alternate.
